Santa María de Vilariño Frío é unha das 13 parroquias do concello ourensán de Montederramo, situada na Terra de Caldelas. Segundo o IGE en 2012 tiña 84 habitantes (45 mulleres e 39 homes), distribuídos en 3 entidades de poboación, o que supón unha diminución en relación ao ano 1999 cando tiña 118 habitantes.

Xeografía |


Ten 5 entidades de poboación: Vilariño Grande, onde se sitúa a igrexa parroquial e cruza a estrada da Ribeira ou estrada a Parada do Sil. O Mesón, antigamente chamado A Casa Nova, sitúase na estrada C-536 (antiga N-120) que une Ourense coa Pobra de Trives. Vilariño Pequeno situado no antigo camiño de Vilariño Frío a Pradomao; As Poulas e O Agro, ámbolos dous na estrada que desde O Mesón vai ó encoro de Leboreiro, encoro de Edrada e ós lugares de Pradomao e Forcas.


Na zona montañosa da cara norte da serra de San Mamede, o seu territorio sitúase a unha altitude media superior aos 800 metros, entre os 860 m dos montes de Ibil, os 888 m dos montes da Esperela (no concello de Parada de Sil), os 911 m do monte do Brozo, os 909 do monte da Penalonga, os 948 do alto da Tabenxa e os 920 m do alto do Outeiro.


Ocupa unha extensión aproximada duns 3,2 km², ocupando o territorio que a mediados do século XVIII constituía o coto de Santa María de Vilariño Frío (33 veciños), dependente de Pedro Manuel de Billar y Toubes, rexedor de Ourense, situado entre os seguintes puntos: a marxe esquerda do río Mao (desde a altura do lugar da Retorta ata a unión do río Mao (o medieval rivulum Humano ou Omano Maior) co río de Hedrada (o medieval rivulum Humano ou Omano Minore), á altura do lugar de Praducelos); a marxe dereita do encoro de Hedrada (desde a ponte de Hedrada ata a súa unión co río Mao, a altura de Praducelos); a marxe dereita do regato do Brozo, monte do Brozo, monte da Penalonga e monte Salgueiros, e ao sur da Tabenxa e do Oural.


A parroquia de Vilariño Frío linda ó oeste coa parroquia de Seoane Vello (da que a separa o río Mao). Ó norte e nordeste coas parroquias de Pradomao e A Hedrada (as dúas do concello de Parada de Sil), das que a separa o río de Hedrada. Ó oeste linda coa parroquia das Chás e co concello de Maceda. Ó Sur linda coa parroquia de Covas e co lugar de Vigueira de Abaixo -o medieval Begeira-, pertencente á parroquia de Nogueira.

Aínda que historicamente situouse por Vilariño Frío o paso da Vía Nova do itinerario de Antonino (a vía romana XVIII que unía Braga con Astorga), os últimos estudos feitos por S. Alvarado, J. C. Ribas e Tomas Vega[1] afirman que esta discorría pola marxe sur do seu territorio, seguindo a liña leste-oeste de Nogueira, Vigueira de Abaixo, Cadaval, Covas e A Palela en dirección ao Camiño da Xe (situado un pouco por encima de Xinzo da Costa, no concello de Maceda).


Por Vilariño Frío pasa o medieval Camiño Real da Cruz de Ferro, que, saíndo do Burgo de Caldelas, vai por Pereiro, Portela, Figueiras, Pousa, Santiago da Medorra, Abeledos (da Cruz de Ferro), Folgoso, A Retorta, Vilariño Frío e segue por Bouzas e Casetas do Rodicio baixando ó val de Maceda por Tioira. Como resto máis visible do paso deste camiño por Vilariño Frío conservase, aínda en bo estado, a chamada Ponte Vella, que consta de tres arcos semicirculares de luces distintas e bóvedas de medio punto. Arcos constituídos por perpiaños de labra moi esmerada e sentados "a oco". A construción actual é, probablemente do século XVII polas súas características construtivas: doelas, irregularidade do trasdous, moderado ancho da calzada, tipo de sillería, alzado e planta dos taxamares e rasante alombada. Por esta ponte pasou Frei Martín Sarmiento o día 3 ou 4 de novembro de 1755, logo de sentir o terremoto do 1 de novembro dese ano en Augas Santas (Allariz), na súa viaxe de volta a Madrid, deténdose medio día en Vilariño Frío para logo seguir camiño de San Paio da Aveleda.[2].




Ponte romana.[3]


Na casa chamada dos «señores de Cornoces», na actualidade propiedade de dona Maruja Rodríguez, atópase un escudo cuartelado onde se representan as armas da familia Reinoso (coa cruz de Calatrava no primeiro cuartel), unha das familias máis potentes e coñecidas de Ourense do século XVIII que posuían pazo en Cornoces (Amoeiro). Tamén están os escudos da familia Figueroa y Calderón, anteriores posuidores do pazo de Cornoces, (con folla de figueira e tres pequenos caldeiros, do segundo cuartel), da familia Ojea (castelo e media lúa, do terceiro cuartel) e da familia Castro (seis roeles de azur, no cuarto cuartel), da que descenden os Condes de Lemos.


No centro do lugar, preto da dita casa de Cornoces, no lugar chamado As Laixas e sobre rocha natural, atópase un peto de ánimas, que presenta un corpo liso formado por perpiaños ben encadrados. No corpo superior, sobre o que emerxe un pedestal de lados cóncavos para unha cruz, presenta un pequeno nicho que alberga un panal deteriorado de madeira coa escena da Virxe do Carme sobre as nubes e as ánimas apiñadas na zona inferior.


A igrexa parroquial, dedicada a Santa María, presenta unha arquitectura neoclásica do século XVIII. No seu interior destaca o retablo maior pola súa riqueza decorativa, a ornamentación exuberante e a expresividade das imaxes. É un claro exemplo do barroco galego. O mesmo os dous retablos laterais: Cristo crucificado (á esquerda) e a Virxe Inmaculada (dereita) enmarcados en arcos neoclásicos. Foi de presentación laical da casa de Tor ata o ano 1957, no que o Bispo de Ourense, Ángel Temiño Saiz (1953-1987) fixo unha nova regulamentación do dereito do padroado na Diocese debido ao excesivo número de parroquias de presentación laical.
