Un diplomático é calquera persoa que exerza o traballo da diplomacia.


Esta profesión pode exercela nunha misión diplomática, nunha misión consular, ante un organismo internacional, no ministerio de relacións exteriores ó que pertenza, ou destacado ante calquera repartición estatal no interior do seu estado.


Un diplomático debe enfrontar problemas de moi diversa índole. O Programa das Nacións Unidas para o Desenvolvemento (PNUD), clasificou no seu momento máis de dez mil temas que podían ser levados por unha chancelería[Cómpre referencia]. Por isto, os diplomáticos adoitan especializarse só nalgúns temas.


En España existen diferentes categorías de diplomáticos segundo o escalafón: embaixador, Ministro plenipotenciario (de 1ª, de 2ª e de 3ª clases), o conselleiro (de só unha clase), o secretario de embaixada (de 1ª, de 2ª e de 3ª clases), e o cónsul.
