Os polos xeográficos son os dous puntos da superficie terrestre por onde a globo terrestre é atravesada polo eixe terrestre. Ao situado no extremo norte chámaselle polo norte, polo boreal ou polo ártico, e ao situado no extremo sur polo sur, polo meridional ou polo antártico.


Os polos (norte e sur) teñen ambos unha latitude xeográfica de noventa graos (norte e sur, respectivamente). Ao seren os puntos onde coinciden todos os meridianos, non teñen lonxitude xeográfica.


As latitudes polares son as situadas por riba (en termos de latitude) dos círculos polares, onde se sitúan as rexións polares, que coinciden a grandes trazos coa denominada zona fría ou de clima frío en climatoloxía.


Por extensión, pode falarse de polos en calquera esfera con eixe de rotación, especialmente para os planetas.
