Short-beaked Echidna
ఎకిడ్నా లేదా ఎఖిడ్నా (ఆంగ్లం: Echidnas), also known as spiny anteaters,[2]టాకీగ్లాసిడే (Tachyglossidae) కుటుంబానికి చెందిన జీవులు. ఇవి ప్లాటిపస్ వలె మోనోట్రిమేటా క్రమానికి చెందిన గుడ్లు పెట్టే క్షీరదాలు. ఇవి న్యూ గినియా మరియు ఆస్ట్రేలియా దేశాలలో జీవిస్తున్నాయి.
వివరాలు
వీని ప్రధానమైన ఆహారం చీమలు మరియు చెదపురుగులు. వీటి నోటిలో పళ్ళు ఉండవు. సుమారు 15 సెం.మీ. పొడవైన నాలుక ఉంటుంది. నాలుకపై ఉన్న జిగట పదార్థం వల్ల చీమలు మొదలైన చిన్న క్రిములు దానికి అంటుకుంటాయి. వెంటనే నోటిలోపలికి తీసుకొని వాటిని చప్పరించి మింగేస్తుంది.
వీటిని చిన్న పాదాలు ఉంటాయి. వాటితో పరిగెత్తలేదు కాని గోతులు మాత్రం తవ్వుతుంది. ఏదైన ఆపద ఎదురైతే గుండ్రంగా బంతిలా చుట్టుకుపోయి ముఖాన్ని, పాదాల్ని దాచేసుకుంటుంది. వేగంగా పరుగెత్తలేకపోయినా ఇవి నీటిలో ఈదగలవు.
ఆడ ఎఖిడ్నా ఏడాదికి ఒక చిన్న గుడ్డును మాత్రమే పెడుతుంది. కంగారు మాదిరిగా ఈ గుడ్డు ఓ సంచిలాంటి దానిలో ఉంచుకుని పొదుగుతుంది. పదిరోజుల తరువాత గుడ్డు నుండి పిల్ల బయటకు వస్తుంది. పిల్ల కేవలం 2 సెం.మీ. పొడవుంటుంది. సంచిలోని ప్రత్యేకమైన గ్రంథుల ద్వారా ఇది తల్లి పాలు తాగుతుంది. ఇలా సంచిలోనే 53 రోజులుంటుంది. తరువాత తల్లి దానిని బయటకు తీసి గొయ్యి లో ఉంచుతుంది. పదిరోజులకొకసారి వచ్చి ఆహారం పెడుతుంది. ఇలా ఏడు నెలను పెంచాక పిల్ల గొయ్యిని వదిలి సొంతంగా ఆహారాన్ని సంపాదించుకోవడం ప్రారంభిస్తుంది.
