Rianxo é un concello da provincia da Coruña, pertencente á comarca da Barbanza. Linda ó norte cos municipios de Lousame e Rois, ó oeste con Boiro, ó leste con Dodro e Catoira a través da ponte sobre o río Ulla, e ó sur coa ría de Arousa. Sitúase a menos de 50 km de Santiago de Compostela e a 150 km da capital de provincia galega máis distante: Ourense.


Segundo o IGE no 2015 tiña unha poboación de 11.386 habitantes [3](11.729 en 2012, 11.780 en 2011, 11.826 en 2010), o que o converte no terceiro concello en poboación da comarca, despois de Ribeira e Boiro. O concello posúe unha densidade de poboación de 197,24 hab./km², e unha superficie de 58,8 km².


O seu xentilicio é rianxeiro/rianxeira.

Situación |


O concello de Rianxo atópase na marxe dereita do río Ulla e da ría de Arousa, a uns 50 km de Compostela. Rianxo fai fronteira polo norte cos concellos de Lousame e Rois; polo sur coa ría de Arousa, que o separa da provincia de Pontevedra; polo leste cos concellos de Dodro e Catoira (separada do territorio rianxeiro polo río Ulla), e polo oeste co concello de Boiro.

Orixinarios da vila son personaxes de tanto peso na cultura galega coma Castelao, Manuel Antonio ou Rafael Dieste, entre outros.



Toponimia |


O topónimo de Rianxo provén seguramente do latín rivus angulus, «a curvatura do río» (Rivu(m) Ángulu(m) > Riv'ang'lo > Rianxo) dada a forma que describe a ría ao seu paso pola vila. Porén, tamén se especula con que provén de rivus amplus, «río ancho».



Patrimonio |


A vila de Rianxo destaca polo seu atractivo turístico e cultural. Na parroquia do Araño atópase o meirande hórreo de toda Galicia[4], en canto a lonxitude (36,75 metros a cámara e 37,05 m o celeiro) e capacidade (cámara 109,31 m³, celeiro 59,09 m³). No tocante ao seu atractivo paisaxístico a vila destaca polo esteiro do Ulla, as súas praias e os miradores do Castro Barbudo, do Monte Pena e do Pico Muralla, dende o que se pode ver as torres da catedral de Santiago de Compostela e incluso as Illas Cíes, na bocana da Ría de Vigo, e aínda máis alá, ata preto da costa portuguesa. Rianxo tamén destaca polo seu patrimonio arqueolóxico e cultural. Na vila atópanse númerosas mámoas como Os Campiños; petróglifos, na actualidade están catalogadas 59 estacións rupestres no concello; castros como o do Castriño, o das Sercas ou o de Traba; ademais de igrexas, capelas, ermidas, pazos, hórreos e os máis de 188 cruceiros catalogados na vila[5].

Ademais de polas súas paisaxes e patrimonio, Rianxo tamén é coñecida por A Rianxeira, canción popular galega, convertida nun dos símbolos culturais de Galicia e particularmente representativa do colectivo dos emigrantes popularizada por emigrantes rianxeiros no exterior.

Economía |


Na vila de Rianxo o sector predominante é o primario no que destacan principalmente a pesca de baixura (sobre todo da sardiña e da xouba), o marisqueo (do berberecho e da ameixa), e o cultivo do mexillón, existindo tamén outras actividades como a agricultura, a explotación forestal e a gandería. A maior presenza industrial é a conserveira. Nos últimos anos produciuse un notable incremento do turismo que influíu notable e positivamente na economía da vila, chegando nos meses estivais case a duplicarse a poboación. En Rianxo existe unha grande oferta de festas variadas, actos culturais e actividades deportivas[23].

Adolfo Muíños (BNG) é o alcalde de Rianxo dende xuño de 2011, cando accedeu ao posto tras as eleccións do 22 de maio de 2011[24]. Nas eleccións municipais do 2007, cun 63,77% de participación, o PSdG-PSOE foi o partido máis votado con 3.540 votos (49,73 %), obtendo así a maioría absoluta con 9 edís; o BNG foi a segunda candidatura máis votada con 1.737 sufraxios (24,40%) e 4 concelleiros, seguido polo PP con 1.725 apoios (24,23%) e 4 representantes[25].
