A Baña é un concello da provincia da Coruña, pertencente á comarca da Barcala. Segundo o IGE en 2014 tiña 3754 habitantes (3967 no 2012, 4102 no 2011, 4320 no 2010). No ano 1980 a poboación chegou a ser de 8775 persoas[3]. O seu xentilicio (véxase no Galizionario) é bañense[4], avaniense ou bañés[5].

Xeografía |


O concello, de 98,2 km², limita cos concellos de Ames, Negreira, Val do Dubra e Santa Comba. Está situado a uns 25 km ao oeste de Santiago de Compostela. Está situado no val de Barcala, que o separa do concello de Negreira.



Orografía e hidrografía |


O seu relevo está caracterizado pola súa irregularidade, contrastando os vales con pequenos montes de escasa altitude. Na Baña non existen grandes elevacións de terreo, non chegando a superarse os 550 metros. O punto máis alto do concello é o cumio de Santa Mariña, con 522 metros de altura sobre o nivel do mar.


O concello está enmarcado en tres vales: o formado polo Barcala, que lle dá nome á comarca, e que discorre pola zona máis occidental do concello até desembocar en Negreira no río Tambre. O val central é o que crean o río Baña, o rego de Faílde e o río Albariña, que xorde da unión de ambos na parroquia da Baña, e que desemboca no propio Barcala en Covas. E no leste do concello está o río Portalaxe, que nace e morre sen deixar o concello, desembocando no río Tambre na parroquia de Fiopáns. Ao norte está o río Abuín, que nalgúns treitos marca o límite municipal con Santa Comba.



Clima |


O concello ten un clima oceánico, morno e húmido, cuns 2000 mm anuais de precipitacións. As temperaturas son moderadas, con 7,2 °C de media en xaneiro, e 17,9 °C en xullo.

Historia |


Consérvanse vestixios arqueolóxicos megalíticos como as mámoas de Ferreiros, e poboados castrexos como os da Baña e o de Lañas. A toponimia dos lugares deixa ver que foi unha zona intensamente romanizada. A presenza de núcleos como Suevos ou Francos constata asemade o asentamento de pobos bárbaros.


A mención máis antiga é nun documento de 1153, contido no tumbo do mosteiro de Toxos Outos: hereditatem que habetis in terra de Avania.


Na Idade Media o concello foi berce dos Trastámara e dominio dos señores de Altamira. Personalidades como o bispo Xelmírez ou a raíña Urraca deixaron constancia da súa importancia. Nos templos relixiosos hai mostras da arte románica e gótica.


Xa no século XIX pasouse a épocas de decadencia económica e política debido ás guerras da Independencia e Carlista, ás desamortizacións de bens eclesiásticos e das confrarías, e á suba de impostos.



Cultura |



Toponimia |


O topónimo Avania aparece documentado xa en 1153 no Tombo de Toxos Outos[7], e no tombo B da catedral de Santiago de Compostela (1209), onde se menciona: ...San Iurgio in Transtamarem. cum tota terra sua quam maiorem ab antiquo habuit, videlicet cum Carnota, Entines, Jalles, Barcala, Auania et de Celtigos, quantum magis antiquitus habuit....


Xa na Idade Media moitos topónimos que comezaban con A- ou O- comezaron a reinterpretarse polos falantes como nomes de lugar formados por un artigo e un substantivo[8]. Estas reinterpretacións tamén se deron noutros topónimos galegos, como Ogrobe, ou Agolada, xa dende a Idade Media. É frecuente que, na literatura popular, se lle atribúa ao influxo do castelán esta reinterpretación[9].



Economía |


O concello da Baña é eminentemente rural, aínda que as actividades agrícolas non son as que ocupan a maioría da poboación. No ano 2001 o sector servizos ocupaba 686 persoas, a agricultura 454, a construción 368, a industria 244 e a pesca 9.


No ano 2003 había no concello un total de 412 explotacións de gando vacún cun total de 7.045 animais e estaban rexistradas un total 49 empresas e 14 comercios.
