Denomínase protectorado á soberanía parcial que un Estado exerce, especialmente no referido ás relacións exteriores, nun territorio que non foi incorporado plenamente ao da súa nación e no cal existen autoridades autóctonas propias.


Como exemplo, podemos citar o protectorado que no seu día exerceron España e Francia sobre Marrocos, onde a autoridade sobre a poboación nativa era exercida polo Sultán, existindo forzas militares e policiais autóctonas, pero tuteladas polos exércitos dos países protectores.


Os gobernos destes países estaban representados, no caso da zona controlada por España, polo Alto Comisario, normalmente un xeneral, e no da zona francesa polo Residente Xeral.
