Brenin neu bennaeth grymus yn yr Hen Ogledd oedd Coel Hen neu Coel (Hen) Godebog (fl. dechrau'r 5g efallai). Ei fab oedd Cenau fab Coel (neu Ceneu).


Mae ei enw yn ffurf Frythoneg ar yr enw personol Lladin Coelius (neu Coelestius) a thybir ar sail hynny ei fod yn dux (sef arweinydd milwrol brodorol) y fyddin Rufeinig yng ngogledd Prydain wrth i rym Rhufain ymddatod ac i'r ymerodraeth adael Prydain.


Llwyddodd Coel i warchod ac amddiffyn y Brythoniaid oedd yn byw yn yr ardaloedd o gwmpas Mur Hadrian rhag yr ymosodiadau newydd gan yr Eingl-Sacsoniaid. Cymaint oedd ei fri fel y daeth pob brenhinllin Frythonaidd yn yr Hen Ogledd i honni eu bod yn tarddu o linach Coel. Dyma'r "Coeling" neu "Coelwys" traddodiadol, disgynyddion Coel Hen. Roeddent yn cynnwys Urien Rheged, Peredur fab Efrog a Gwallog. Mae rhai achau yn gwneud Cunedda yn fab i Edern a Gwawl ferch Coel. Yng Nghymru roedd y Coeling yn cynnwys Llywarch Hen a saint fel Cynllo.


Mae Syr John Morris-Jones yn cynnig uniaethu teyrnas Coel ag ardaloedd Aeron a Kyle yn ne'r Alban.


Yn yr Oesoedd Canol daeth yn adnabyddus yn Lloegr fel Old King Cole, gwrthrych yr hwiangerdd Saesneg.
