Aneirin ou Neirin foi un poeta britano do século VI. Crese que foi un bardo ou ‘poeta cortesán’ nun dos reinos de Cumbria no “Vello Norte” “Yr Hen Ogledd”, probabelmente o de Gododdin en Edimburgo, na moderna Escocia. Desde o século XVII o seu nome apareceu escrito incorrectamente como Aneurin.

As obras a el atribuídas consérvanse nun manuscrito de finais do século XIII coñecido como o Libro de Aneirin (ou Llyfr Aneirin en galés). A lingua foi modernizada ao galés medio, pero outras partes en galés antigo indican que polo menos algúns dos poemas datan de aproximadamente a época de Aneirin, e a súa atribución pode ser, xa que logo, xenuína. A obra puido ter sobrevivido pola tradición ora lata ser posta po rescrito por vez primeira, quizais no século IX.


A súa obra máis coñecida é Y Gododdin, unha serie de elexías polos guerreiros do reino setentrional de Gododdin que, aproximadamente no ano 600, caeron contra os anglos de Deira e Bernicia na batalla de Catraeth (se cadra Catterick en North Yorkshire). A poesía contén numerosas dificultades textuais e as interpretacións varían debido a iso. Unha stanza contén o que pode ser a máis antiga referencia ao rei Arturo, como un exemplo de bravura co que se compara un guerreiro morto: a identificación é, con todo, unha conxectura. O poema cóntanos que Aneirin estivo presente na batalla e, tras tomáreno prisioneiro, foi un dos catro (ou dous, noutras versións) sobreviventes britanos. Ficou cativo ata que Ceneu ap Llywarch Hen pagou os eu rescate.



Identidade e reputación |


As mencións de Aneirin entre os fillos de Caw, un xefe do reino de Strathclyde, son tardíos e erróneos. A nai de Aneirin, Dwywei, é mencionada, con todo, en 'Y Gododdin'. Pode ser a mesma dona que segundo as liñaxes galesas antigas, casou co rei Dunod, quen se pensa que tería reinado en West Yorkshire. Era tamén familiar doutro poeta britano, Cian Gwenith Gwawd.


A finais do século XVIII fixéronse intentos de identificar a Aneirin co escritor do século VI Xildas, baseados na forma incorrecta do seu nome arriba indicada. Thomas Stephens pensou despois que o poeta fora fillo de Xildas. Ámbalas dúas ideas están agora desacreditadas.


As tríades galesas describen a Aneirin como "príncipe de bardos" e "de verso fluído". Nennio lóao entre os máis vellos poetas galeses ou Cynfeirdd, contemporáneo de Talhaearn, Taliesin, Bluchbardd e Cian. Hai referencias a Aneirin na obra dos Poetas dos Príncipes, pero a súa fama declinou a finais da Idade Media at ao rexurdimento da identidade gales apor parte de escritores anticuarios do período dos Tudor. Hoxe, a reputación da súa poesía fica alta, se ben a identidade exacta do autor é algo máis controvertido.
